NICholas KOOTENHAYOO

Nick is a proud member of the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation. He is fortunate to have a supportive family and currently resides in the City of Edmonton. As a Red Seal Journeyman Carpenter in the province of Alberta, he also holds a National Construction Safety Officer Designation. His upbringing spans both his home community and the city, providing him with a unique perspective that has shaped his life. The knowledge he has gained from these experiences is invaluable, offering insights that can only be fully understood through lived experience.

Nick believes he is called to this line of work to serve his people and address the housing challenges they face. In his culture, individuals who dedicate themselves to helping others are referred to as “Kushkabi” or “helpers.” This principle of working together toward common goals is a central tenet of his cultural practices, and he applies this mindset to both his professional and personal life.

In keeping with our way of life, he chooses to remain free from drugs and alcohol, honoring the wisdom of our past elders who taught that 'drugs and alcohol do not belong in our culture.' This commitment reflects his dedication to his work and ensures he can fully serve and support his community without distraction or compromise.

He trusts that the Creator will guide him to the right opportunities and connect him with the nations in need of his support. He is grateful for the chance to contribute and looks forward to the possibility of working together.
